3D Stereo Vision-Guided Dual-Robot Bin Picking
Robotics · Computer Vision · Industrial Automation
Context
A bin-picking cell at Renault Group Tooling needed to identify and precisely place parts using two ABB robots and a new 3D stereo-vision part-recognition technology, safely integrated into an existing production environment.
The challenge
Reliably recognizing parts in 3D and translating that recognition into precise, repeatable placement relative to each robot's TCP (tool center point) — 258 validated grasp configurations were established per part — while meeting industrial safety requirements (Siemens Safety PLC over PROFINET/PROFIsafe, safety cameras) and handling two different gripping needs: vacuum gripping for cardboard separators and mechanical jaw gripping for production parts.
My role
Functional analysis, fine-tuning, commissioning, mechanical corrections and production-reliability work on the cell, across the vision, robot and safety systems.
The approach
The 3D stereo-vision technology was evaluated and tuned against the real parts to reach 258 validated grasp configurations per part linked to each robot's TCP. Vacuum gripping was used for cardboard separators and mechanical jaw gripping for the production parts themselves. The cell's safety was built on a Siemens Safety PLC communicating over PROFINET/PROFIsafe with safety cameras, and conveyors handled part flow in and out of the two-ABB-robot cell.
